With so many types of stone floor out there, we know it can be difficult to begin seeking information regarding your upcoming project. As we get these questions, we’ve decided to post them here and our answers with anyone who may also be curious!

Someone spilled a strong chemical cleaner on our stone floors, should I be worried?

Even if your floor is sealed, do not leave strong chemicals, such as bleach, sitting on your stone floor for very long. Chemical cleaners such as bleach and even non-chemical acidic liquids such as vinegar can cause damage to your stone floors if not immediately removed and washed off. This is due to the chemical reaction between the stone floor and the strong abrasive that wears down vital structural minerals and causes the material to become brittle overtime.

Can stone floors be steam cleaned?

Stone floors should not be steam cleaned. Steam cleaners do a lot of damage to sealed stone floors. Most sealants, while resistant to natural “everyday” temperatures, cannot stand up the heat of the steam emitted by steam cleaners. Once that seal is off, the natural stone below is also subject to the corrosion of its sub-surface elements due to natural stone’s inherent porous nature.  To clean your stone floors safely, we recommend hiring an expert team such as ATX Stone Sealers or using a very light mixture of dish soap and water.

I want to paint my stone floor, is that OK?

There are a few opinions out there but generally, yes you can paint your stone floor if you take the proper steps to do so. Sealed stone floors are a bit harder to paint but many experts recommend the use of acrylic or latex paint to add the color as needed. Note that just like with painting wood, unless you’re an expert, the characteristics of the stone will no longer be as visible. If you do decide to go down this route, be sure to clean the tile first with a light soap/water mixture then go at it with your usual painting tools.

How can I protect my entry way stone from damage?
After ensuring your stone floors are sealed, we recommend adding a welcome mat outside the entrance as well as a beautiful rug within. This way, any visitors who arrive will hopefully wipe their feet before entering removing any unwanted dirt and grime there with any leftover getting caught by your entryway rug. By the time their feet hit your stone floors, most of that worrisome debris should be comfortably left behind.
